Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge
The Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located in Beaufort County, South Carolina between the mainland and Hilton Head Island. The 4,053-acre refuge includes Pinckney Island, Corn Island, Big Harry and Little Harry Islands, Buzzard Island, and numerous small hammocks.
Pinckney is the largest of the islands and the only one open to public use. Nearly 67% of the refuge consists of salt marsh and tidal creeks. Other land types include forestland, brushland, fallow field and freshwater ponds - all which supports an array of bird and plant life.There are 14 miles of hiking trails on the refuge. Along the way experience the beautiful lowcountry scenery of salt flats and marshes while viewing birds, crabs, basking alligators, and lots of beautiful, large birds nesting in the various ponds along the paved pathway. The Ibis Pond is a rookery for over a dozen different types of wading birds. Wildlife commonly observed on Pinckney Island include waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors, and white-tailed deer, as well as the American Alligator, Flatwoods Salamander, and the Nine-banded armadillo.
Although there are no services here, the gravel path is very well maintained and the site is very well cared for. Whether hiking or biking, Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge's scenery and wildlife will delight you.
